Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits, called plaques, clog the blood vessels that deliver blood to the brain and head (carotid arteries). These clogged blood vessels increase the risk of stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency that happens when the brain loses all or much of its blood supply. Your carotid arteries supply blood to your brain, face and neck. You have two common carotid arteries. Each one divides into an external and internal carotid artery. WebMD explains carotid artery disease, including the symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment. Carotid artery stenosis, also called carotid artery disease, is a condition that can lead to stroke. When you have carotid artery stenosis, a substance called plaque builds up and blocks the normal flow of blood in your artery. Carotid artery disease can develop silently, but early detection can save your life. Learn the warning signs and when to seek expert care. For related background details, please refer to our report on 3 wire blower motor wiring diagram. Carotid Doppler screening is primarily done to detect narrowing or blockage caused by plaque, a condition called carotid artery stenosis, which significantly raises the risk of stroke. The goal in treating carotid artery disease is to prevent stroke. Treatment depends on how blocked the carotid arteries are, whether the blockage is causing symptoms, and the age and other illnesses of the person who has the blockage.
