While LANs may use wired or wireless media, Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) dominates as the primary wired LAN standard. It provides standardized framing, efficient media access control, and scalable physical layer options, enabling reliable communication from 10 Mbps to multi-hundred-gigabit speeds. Ethernet is a traditional technology used to connect devices in a wired local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN), enabling them to communicate with each other through a protocol (a set of rules or a common network language). A wired Ethernet connection lets you get a fast internet connection—plug one end of the Ethernet cable into your router at home, then plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your Windows PC. I just wired up an ethernet wire to one of those wall plates that you just screw each wire to. The other end is in the basement and I'm not sure I wired it properly because the wall plate is not color ... It was commercially introduced in 1980 and first standardized in 1983 as ECMA -82 and shortly after as IEEE 802.3. It is an example of an open standard. Ethernet has since been refined to support higher bit rates, a greater number of nodes, and longer link distances, but retains much backward compatibility. Ethernet is technology designed to solve the problem of packet collision by having network-connected devices follow a set of rules that let devices communicate.
