A structurally complete leaf of an angiosperm consists of a petiole (leaf stalk, called a stipe in ferns), a lamina (leaf blade), stipules (small structures located to either side of the base of the petiole) and a sheath. I have put together a simple guide to leaf parts with a clear diagram and plain explanations for each piece. You will see where they sit and how they work together to keep the plant alive. leaf, in botany, any usually flattened green outgrowth from the stem of a vascular plant. As the primary sites of photosynthesis, leaves manufacture food for plants, which in turn ultimately nourish and sustain all land animals. The meaning of LEAF is a lateral outgrowth from a plant stem that is typically a flattened expanded variably shaped greenish organ, constitutes a unit of the foliage, and functions primarily in food manufacture by photosynthesis. Broadly all leaves are classified into two main types, based on the arrangement of the leaf lamina (the broad, thin, flattened surface of the leaf), which is the site of photosynthesis and transpiration in plants. For related background details, please refer to our report on dodge challenger exhaust diagram. The presence of pigment ‘chlorophyll’ makes the leaf green in color that helps to prepare food in plants through photosynthesis. Collectively, green leaves are called foliage. LEAF offers a wide scope of opportunities for you to get involved with - from industry events to competitions for young people. Our diverse events range from education-focused events, technical farm tours to insightful online webinars. Leaves may be simple (that is, the leaf blade or 'lamina' is undivided) or compound (that is, the leaf blade is divided into two or more leaflets). [1] The edge of the leaf may be regular or irregular, and may be smooth or have hair, bristles, or spines.
