Explore leg anatomy with a labeled diagram of parts of the leg, bones, muscles, joints & the functions of the thigh, knee, and lower leg. There are thirty bones in each leg. The major bones are the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shinbone), and adjacent fibula. The part of the leg between the hip and the knee is called the thigh. The part between the knee and the ankle is called the lower leg, shank, crus, or in anatomy simply the leg. [1] . In humans and other mammals, a leg includes the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, and skin. In insects, the leg includes most of these things, except that insects have an exoskeleton that replaces the function of both the bones and the skin. We’ll break down the anatomy and function of the upper leg, knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot. You’ll learn about the muscles, bones, and other structures of each area of the leg. This article delves into the muscles of the lower leg, presented through detailed diagrams of the right leg in anterior, superficial posterior, and deep posterior views, highlighting their anatomical structure and functional roles. These muscles, working in harmony, enable us to perform a wide range of movements, from walking and running to jumping and standing on our toes.
