Squid - Ocean Animals — Squid - Ocean Animals

squid, any of more than 300 species of 10-armed cephalopods classified within the order Teuthoidea (or Teuthida) and found in both coastal and oceanic waters. Squids may be swift swimmers or part of the drifting sea life (plankton). Squids have elongated tubular bodies and short compact heads. These anatomical differences between squid and octopuses can help explain why squid can be found swimming comparably to fish while octopuses usually rely on other forms of locomotion on the sea floor such as bipedal walking, crawling, and non-jetting swimming. Squid are cephalopods of the order Teuthida. They are the sister group to the octopods. Squid are carnivores, but they are also hunted as prey. The largest squid, the giant squid and colossal squid, are eaten by sperm whales and sleeper sharks. [2] There are about 300 species of squid. Squids are cephalopods similar to octopuses and cuttlefish evolving as early as the Jurassic period. Their elongated bodies, eight arms, and two long tentacles give them that unique appearance. No wonder, in the past, squids were often associated with tales related to sea monsters. Read on to discover 16 of the more interesting squid species. 1. Giant Squid. 2. Colossal Squid. 3.
