What is a tendon (sinew)? A tendon, or sinew, is a cord of strong, flexible tissue, similar to a rope. Tendons connect your muscles to your bones. Tendons let you move your limbs. They also help prevent muscle injury by absorbing some of the impact your muscles take when you run, jump or do other movements. Your body contains thousands of tendons. Explore what tendons are, their types Learn about key tendons in the human body, the anatomy, major examples, and their critical functions. It sends the mechanical forces of muscle contraction to the skeletal system, while withstanding tension. Tendons, like ligaments, are made of collagen. The difference is that ligaments connect bone to bone, while tendons connect muscle to bone. There are about 4,000 tendons in the adult human body. [1][2] Learn what tendons are made of, how they connect muscle to bone, and why they heal so slowly compared to other tissues. Both are made of connective tissue and can be torn or overstretched, but they differ in function and are essential to proper body... Found throughout the body—from the small tendons in your fingers and toes to larger ones like the Achilles tendon in your ankle—they enable coordinated motion by transmitting the force generated by your muscles to your skeletal system. Tendons act as levers that move the bones when you tighten or relax your muscles. They transmit the force produced by muscle movement to the bones to allow movement and maintain body posture.
