General

In humans, the ear is described as having three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear consists of the auricle, the visible outer part, and the ear canal. The middle ear includes the tympanic cavity and the three ossicles. Human ear, organ of hearing and equilibrium that detects and analyzes sound by transduction and maintains the sense of balance. Anatomically, the ear has three distinguishable parts: the outer, middle, and inner ear. This detailed anatomical illustration showcases the complex structure of the outer ear, highlighting its various components that work together to capture and funnel sound waves toward the middle ear. Found in humans and many other vertebrates, the ear includes structures both visible externally and hidden deep within the skull. These structures collect sound, convert it into electrical signals, and help regulate spatial orientation. Your outer ear and middle ear are separated by your eardrum, and your inner ear houses the cochlea, vestibular nerve and semicircular canals (fluid-filled spaces involved in balance and hearing). Learn about what each part does, how hearing and balance work, and common ear conditions. The ear canal (external acoustic meatus, external auditory meatus, EAM) is a pathway running from the outer ear to the middle ear. The adult human ear canal extends from the auricle to the eardrum and is about 25 millimetres (1 in) in length and 7 millimetres (0.3 in) in diameter. The ear is divided into three parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Together, they collect sound, send it inward, and turn it into signals that the brain understands.
